Education

Education World
This site provides access to a database of more than 500,000 Web resources, as well as to original content written for the site. Education World is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in education. It includes familiar resource categories such as “Lesson Planning” for teachers as well as categories aimed at administrators and parents. It is a richer more ambitious project than most other general education Web portals. This site is highly recommended.

Greek Mythology Link
This is an extensively linked collection of information on the mythology of classical Greece. Based on original sources from 800 BCE to 600 CE, the site provides short definitions, long articles, images, maps and other information on the characters and stories found in Greek mythology. According to the site's "Elucidation", the purpose is to provide information on "the creative, artistic, literary and inspiring aspects of the Greek myths" and not on "the historical, religious, liturgical, anthropological, archaeological, philosophical, ideological, sociological, linguistic, or psychoanalytical approaches to Greek Mythology". It presents information rather than analyzing it. Lucid and scholarly and with enormous depth of information, the site is relevant for students studying myth in detail and needing references to original sources, and for those seeking references and information.

Searchable and annotated subject directory of Internet resources selected and evaluated by librarians for their usefulness to users of public libraries. Excellent resource of reviewed websites covering the facets of education.

The Educator’s Reference Desk
The Educator’s Reference Desk is a virtual library for teachers, administrators, researchers and parents. The site has 3 major collections: resource guides, lesson plans, and question archives. All three can be browsed by clicking on general subject categories or searched through a basic keyword search engine or advanced search mode, where users can search each collection separately or together, using Boolean search operators. Advanced searching allows users to filter results by grade level, which is particularly useful in finding appropriate lesson plans.

LD Online
This site is “colourful, informative and easy to use”. The site strives to be a major source of information for parents, teachers and children interested in gathering information and support related to learning disabilities. LD Online is well monitored and changes weekly, providing a good balance of research, political news and informative articles. Individuals new to the field can explore basic information on multiple aspects of learning disabilities, while those with more specific interests can gather information from audio clips or a special bulletin board by experts in the field. An open bulletin board provides opportunities to interact with parents, teachers, and individuals with learning disabilities – a section that appears to get quite a bit of use. Questions and responses are easily navigated. Overall, the organization and content of this site are excellent. It is attractive to the eye and enticing for the mind, making it an excellent tool for anyone interested in learning more about learning disabilities.

NSDL: The National Science Digital Library
This site is funded by the National Science Foundation and its portal is designed to create an online library of high quality resources and tools that support innovations in teaching and learning at all levels of science technology, engineering, educational technology and mathematics education. This site allows teachers and students to search by topic, form of media and grade level. Users will be pleased with the quality of contents but they may also be overwhelmed with the quantity of materials from which to select. The search engine quickly provides results. A highly recommended site.

Overall the SWE Web site is a handy, single location to access a variety of useful information related to women in engineering.

- Computer

Free On-Line Dictionary of Computing
FOLDOC is perfect for understanding the cyberbabble one encounters when online. It explains terms like “popserver”, “SMAIL”, “applets”, “cookies”, “FAT”, “fatal error”, and “Captain Crunch”. The best aspect of online dictionaries (as opposed to those in print) is the ease with which links (cross-references to related terms) can be added. Perfect for all levels of users and an example of useful sources assembled by the global cybercommunity.

Librarian's Internet Index - Computer Engineering
Searchable and annotated subject directory of Internet resources selected and evaluated by librarians for their usefulness to users of public libraries. Excellent resource of reviewed websites covering the facets of computer engineering.

Environmental Studies

Dartmouth Flood Observatory
Dartmouth Flood Observatory (DFO) has been established as a repository of worldwide flood data. DFO contains tabulated data on major flooding, including damage, dates, countries, districts, and rivers affected; maps compiling areas affected by flooding; sample images depicting selected flood events; and other research-oriented data describing flooding. DFO describes how the Surface Water Watch can be used to determine where flooding is under way, to predict inundation extents, and to access the surface water status of seasonal wetlands. DFO includes information from government and research centers in the US and the world. The historical comparison is this Web site’s strength, as flood and river discharge data has not been included in climate data shared by countries.

Globalchange.gov
As noted prominently on its home page, Globalchange.gov is the "gateway to global change data and information". The site is the product of the Data and Information Working Group, a 17 year collaboration of eight US agencies that address global change issues. The main goal of the site is to enable interagency, data management and sharing. By following the "full and open policy", government funded, high quality data directly related to global change is made available to participating government agencies as well as to non-government researchers, educators and the public. "Ask Dr Global Change" helps users access data to answer specific global change questions. This section of the site also contains an archive of questions and answers, and links to sites providing basic information about global change. The first stop in the search for global change information.

It is one of the mechanisms that IOC provides to promote global cooperation among member states of the UN in studying and addressing ocean and coastal problems, and is intended to help scientists and other ocean experts locate relevant information. Some of the major categories are: Information Resources: where and how to obtain marine information; Data Resources: where and how to obtain marine data; Scientific Topics: general information about a marine topic including detailed descriptions of specific research within the topic; Administration, Conservation and Policy.

European Studies

EuroNews
EuroNews is a spin-off of the similarly named cable news channel. Its aim is to make a version of world news and cultural information available across Europe while “avoiding bias or national viewpoint”. The Web page, like the TV news, is offered in seven languages, including Russian. The viewer can choose video clips from many categories, some with self evident titles (e.g. latest bulletin, News, Sports etc). In some cases, complete printed text accompanies the video, but usually only the first few sentences are available in print. There is no archive and no search capability. It is unique in offering so many news segments, features, and interviews in video format. For that reason, it draws viewer attention, especially since the same story can be repeated in several languages or in the language of origin.
