premier monographs and major newspapers, including
the full text of the New York Times from 1995, and
the news from London Times from 1985. Academic

FIRST: Facts on International Relations and Security
Trends
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute
(SIPRI), whose printed works have long been highly
regarded, moves into Cyperspace with the FIRSTsite,
which is a joint project of SIPRI and the
International Relations and Security Network. Users
can access 39 databases prepared by 18 separate
centers, programs, agencies, etc., from governmental
and nongovernmental organizations in eight countries
in North America and Europe. Several divisions of
the UN contribute to the site as well. The databases
include all sorts of information on all aspects of
conflict, e.g. summaries of conflicts, maps,
military expenditures, military equipment, military
strength, arms traffic and nuclear capability. These
military-focused databases are put into context with
general country information-population, size,
density and rate of increase; gross
domestic/national product and budget figures;
political structure and more. Users can search on
any of 196 individual countries or compare up to 6
countries. The database includes all the world’s
independent countries plus Palestine and the two New
Zealand associate states. Content is clear, concise,
well written, and easy to navigate.

encyclopedia of geographical places and features

DOAJ : Directory of Open Access Journals
DOAJ the most comprehensive directory of open access
journals, is produced by the University of Lund
Libraries. It currently offers access to 2,125
titles and nearly 91,000 articles. More than a
quarter of the journals included are searchable at
the article level. Subject coverage of the journals
includes all areas – multidisciplinary, arts,
humanities, social sciences, physical and life
sciences, engineering and technology. DOAJ aims to
be a one-stop experience for those seeking
information through open sources. Aiming at
comprehensible coverage, it is a model for expanding
the “visibility and ease of use of open access
scientific and scholarly journals thereby promoting
their increased usage and impact”. The definitions
and selection criteria that support open access for
the purposes of DOAJ include journals that practice
peer review. DOAJ is important for scholars as an
indexing tool and as a directory of the expanding
number of journals being released as open access.

CyLaw
CyLaw is a legal information project that was set up
in February 2002 to provide free access through the
internet to the Cyprus legal materials that are at
any time publicly available in electronic format.
The CyLaw database contains all judgments issued by
the Supreme Court of Cyprus since 1997 as well as
most civil appeals and first instance judgments
issued by the Supreme Court in 1996. In total, the
CyLaw database currently contains about 8.600
judgments. CyLaw also includes the Civil Procedure
rules. It includes consolidated versions of the
rules from the original text to the latest
amendments and users can if they wish review all
previous versions of each rule. Information on this
database is available in both Greek and English.
