This remarkable Web site consists of several databases that enable users not only to access different kinds of music, photographs, manuscripts, letters, and other documents, but to come as close as possible to experiencing materials of the Library of Congress’s collections by exploring various kinds of digital media. Special Presentations exemplifies a fascinating coordination of texts, sound recordings, pictures, catalogs, supporting documentation, and searching and zooming capabilities. The Library of Congress plans to include new presentations and to add or incorporate more materials to some of the presentations already available. The Featured Collections, Historic Sheet Music, now covers from 1800-1922 and is already well known as a model sheet music database for its breadth, detailed cataloging, visual presentation of the scores, and accessibility to songs through sound recordings.

 
World News

Founded in 1998, the World News Network provides access to over 500 media sources and 4000 thematic and regional news sites in numerous languages at its Web site. The main page’s top half features links to major news stories, with links across the very top to stories on business, science, society and sports; news photographs; Web-accessible broadcasts; the site map; site archives; and feedback. Further down the page are links to regional news from North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, South America, Africa, Australia and the Caribbean. At the bottom are links to the previous week’s news. Links on the left refer users to sites covering world and regional news, entertainment, social and cultural affairs, science, sports and business. Also offered are a search engine for obtaining company financial information via stock market ticker symbols and audio links to Web broadcasts of the BBC, CBC, NPR and Canal Sur Radio in Spain. Despite the large number of links, the main page is very organized and easy to navigate. In addition to browsing, the site includes basic and advanced search functions. The basic search provides keyword searching in 23 languages. Search results show brief records containing story headlines, followed by the first several sentences of the story and the original source. Searching may be limited to stories appearing in the last three days, last three weeks or last two months and may be sorted by 11 categories. It will be useful for locating information on current events and cultural affairs.

 
DOAJ : Directory of Open Access Journals

DOAJ the most comprehensive directory of open access journals, is produced by the University of Lund Libraries. It currently offers access to 2,125 titles and nearly 91,000 articles. More than a quarter of the journals included are searchable at the article level. Subject coverage of the journals includes all areas – multidisciplinary, arts, humanities, social sciences, physical and life sciences, engineering and technology. DOAJ aims to be a one-stop experience for those seeking information through open sources. Aiming at comprehensible coverage, it is a model for expanding the “visibility and ease of use of open access scientific and scholarly journals thereby promoting their increased usage and impact”. The definitions and selection criteria that support open access for the purposes of DOAJ include journals that practice peer review. DOAJ is important for scholars as an indexing tool and as a directory of the expanding number of journals being released as open access.

IPL also provides information about research methods, including pathfinders), Bartleby also provides access to reference sources. Its reference titles include Columbia Encyclopedia, American Heritage Dictionary, Roget’s Thesaurus, English usage sources, quotation collections, the Bible (Authorized Version), Shakespeare and Gray’s Anatomy. Providing electronic access to older classics and some copyrighted titles, Bartleby arranges English and American nonfiction, fiction and verse (19th through early 20th centuries) into “anthologies” and “specific volumes”.
